Uniform Tweaks: Washington Wizards

Posted by Neil Paine on June 14, 2010

New Wizards owner Ted Leonsis has stated that he's open to the possibility of changing the Wizards' team colors, if not their name. As we all know, the Washington Bullets had a good color scheme going throughout their history, but the prevalence of gun-related fatalities in the nation's capital led Abe Pollin to change the team's nickname to the Wizards -- and change the team colors to a scheme that not even God Michael Jordan himself could make look good. However, now that Leonsis is in charge, there's been a groundswell of fan support to change the colors -- and name -- back to the way they were before the late 1990s. Of course, my hunch is that it will stay the "Wizards" for the foreseeable future out of respect to Pollin... but a change back to the old red, white, & blue colors is highly probable. Here's my take:

I agree with the Nation. Leave the Wiz name off, and if possible the logo. Sell more jerseys while you can with a new color scheme and if at all possible use the Bullets retro jersey as much as possible to get some excitement back in DC.

We talk about it on the show every week we get a chance.

Unfortunately these look too much like the Clippers' current unis, especially the home whites with the cursive writing.

  3. Neil Paine Says:

That's a good point -- although in fairness, the Bullets were sporting that color scheme long before the Clippers were even a gleam in Donald Sterling's eye.

  4. Tyson Says:

Definitely an improvement over what they have now, but wouldn't the "Wizards" name be on the home jersey and the cursive "Washington" be on the road jersey? Could you flip it?

On a random note, I just noticed that the "W" in "Wizards" looks sort of like the Wu-Tang Clan's emblem. Fair to say, that's a little too late-'90s vibe going on there. Maybe the "Wizards" part should be in cursive/updated somehow too.

  5. Ricardo Says:

Call me crazy, but I much prefer the Wizards current color scheme to RWB yet again. In fact, it's one of my favorite color combos in the NBA.

The uniform design, on the other hand...

  6. Sean Says:

I'd take the old BULLETS uni's and just put 'WIZARDS' on them. The league needs a uniform that is half 19th century male bathing suit and half Wonder Woman shorts.

  7. Bruce Says:

Just dump the gold unis. Pretty please. Hate, hate, hate those.

  8. Alan Says:

The name Wizards and the logo are weak. They should call the team the Washington Wolfpack. I would go with a Gray, White, and Black color combo. The logo would be a wolfs paw print, with a basketball where the the pad would be. Just me.

  9. Jason Says:

Wolfpack huh? . . . I would call them the “Twinkle toes”, and have a pink and light purple color scheme. It doesn’t matter what they wear, because they’re going to suck either way.

  10. Nicolas Ballou-Perez Says:

I love the new uniform except that they should switch the names on each uniform. What I mean is have Wizards on the home jersey and Washington on the away jersey. The new colors make the Primary logo look even cooler than the one they have now. Also what a way to represent the nation's capital.

  11. Joe Says:

Are you allowed to take the exact font of the Nationals for "Washington"? I like it. Think it would be cool if the both used it.

  12. Blue Says:

i absolutely HATE the "Wizards" name and logo!!!!! unless they change the name back to the bullets, then the red white and blue has a sucky team connotation to me...ala Old Bullets and New Clippers. change the name...change the logo...change the colors
