Layups: Interview on The Pulse Network

Posted by Neil Paine on July 14, 2010

After my LeBron Rant last week, Butch Stearns of The Pulse Network contacted me and asked me to be a guest on his program, The Sports Buzz:

Watch live streaming video from thepulsenetwork at livestream.com

We covered the main thesis of the post, as well as some additional LeBron talk. Thanks again to Butch for having me on as a guest!

  1. Jason J Says:

    Well done, Neil.

  2. AHL Says:

    Hang on,

You said the USG% was finishing offensive plays, whether it's shots, pass, or turnovers, but in the Glossary there's no use of assists in the definition.

Is there a better stat that we can look at to say "I think LeBron passing to Wade/Bosh for the finish and Wade passing to LeBron/Bosh for the finish will really create synergy instead of fighting to ballhog" aside from looking at individual ORtgs and AST% in 2011? Looking at their previous USG% seems like it assumes these guys will be lots iso like they were with their old teams.

  3. Neil Paine Says:

You're right, sorry about that, on the main player pages we use a different definition of "usage", while I was thinking of the Oliver definition (which does include assists).

  4. Neil Paine Says:

One way you could frame the usg/ast% situation with LeBron and Wade would be to look at touches, and what % were devoted to each type of action (mouse over headers for descriptions):
