Team USA World Championship Extravaganza

Team USA capped off a strong tournament yesterday by defeating host nation Turkey 81-64 in the championship game of the 2010 FIBA Worlds, and I'm going to cap off our coverage with the final U.S. advanced stats from the tourney:

While Kevin Durant's offensive performance was brilliant, the actual difference between this year's winning World Championship team and the version that lost in 2006 was defense -- the '06 version was actually better offensively, but allowed 10 more points per 100 possessions, which proved to be their downfall in the loss to Greece. Likewise, when you look at the Redeem Team's stats, you see that they were also much better than the 2006 team on defense, while also being a good deal better than the 2010 version on offense, effectively combining the best parts of both the '06 and '10 formulas.

Finally, for fun, here are some stats from the 1994 USA Men's National Team, the last U.S. team to win a World Championship before this year:

    KD was amazing, as were Rudy Gay (look at those rebounding and defense stats!), Love, Iguodala, and Chandler. Rose, Gordon, Curry, and Odom were not very good at all. Granger was awful.

    KD was a decent rebounder, though his defense was rather questionable at times. On offense, his TS% of 69.3%, combined with 26% usage, 14% TOR, and 11% ASTR, was absolutely amazing.

    Rudy Gay excellent on offense and defense. Solid TS%, decent ASTR, 20% Usage and a very low 8.7% TOR combined to make him the 4th best offensive player on the team (behind KD, Love, and Billups). On defense he was the best. 4% steals and 6.8% blocks were amazing!

    Westbrook played like a small version of Gay: solid on offense and defense.

    Wow. Rose seemed to have a lot of positive impact on that team. I'm really surprised to see such a blowful SPM. Same with Lamar actually.

    Rose had a very low TS%, 20+% TOR, and mediocre defensive stats. Odom had basically 0 assists and 15%+ TOR, with a relatively low TS%.

    What about DRtg relatively to tournaments average?
    Or strengt of opponets? Because I feel that 2006 USA team had stronger opponets than 2010 (no Spain, Greece, Brazil, Serbia)

    Just for fun indeed. When Shaq can find the time to launch 4 3 pointers in a limited amount of games, you know the competition is weak.

    Odom, you have to remember, was constantly going against larger opponents on defense and offense. I think he played quite well and was probably 3rd most valuable behind Durant and Iggy on the team. Who would have thought he would have played so well pre-tournament holding down the center position the whole tourney?

    Odom had basically 0 assists because of how basketball does assists. He had a whole lot of plays where he'd have gotten assists in hockey, and let's be clear: Odom was the one creating the offense on those plays.

    Odom was not great in the group stages (true of a lot of Team USA, they all got better as they got more used to international rules, and the FIBA ball. They went from being called for traveling a couple times a quarter to not at all in the finals), but was excellent in the semi-finals and finals. Anyone who thought he didn't play well didn't watch the games.

    Iggy was almost as good on D as Durant was on O. He shut down the other team's best player in every important game.

    Of the guys who played in this tournament, I'd consider taking Durant, Iggy, Love, Odom and Westbrook to the Olympics over Miller, Jamison, Brand, Hinrich, and either Johnson or Battier. Only Durant would start, mind. Of course, new guys could come in, and you never know who will be healthy come 2012.

    Adj/raw plus minus could clarify Odom and Iguodala's contributions, though it would be obviously really crude/noisy with this sample size. Unfortunately, it's really the only method that can capture things like playmaking, screening, non-gambling on ball defense, help defense, etc that Odom and Iguodala are really good at.

    Iggy has been shown plenty of love in the Oliver and SPM stats.

    As for Odom, hockey assists are one of those things on basketball that don't occur often enough over a large enough sample size to be of importance to efficiency, at least compared to other offensive factors. Assists leading to the assist are certaintly important at times, but they can be overvalued and also cumbersome to track and assign appropriate credit for. Scorers have come under fire a little bit for being too generous with the DIRECT assist on a player's home court in recent years - I'd rather see them work on that instead for now.

    In general, I feel that the SPM and Oliver stats capture offense quite well (though adding location of assists and how often the player's shots are assisted would help). Defense is what is not captured so well, being limited to block%, steal%, and DRR%. I doubt setting screens and hockey assists are really a huge factor...
