Two Minor Site Additions

10th June 2011

This is just a short post to announce a couple of minor additions to the site:

  1. I added an option to the Player Season Finder to search for total seasons matching criteria. This option will allow you to find out who had the most seasons with 2000 or more points in NBA history, who had the most seasons with 10 or more Win Shares in NBA history, and so on.
  2. Speaking of Win Shares, I have finally extended them back to the 1946-47 BAA season (i.e., the first season of what is now known as the NBA). Previously they had only gone back to the 1951-52 season because that was the first season that minutes played were an official statistic. As one might expect, George Mikan dominates this five-year period.

Site Features: Check Out the Play Index!

30th March 2011

With the playoffs rapidly approaching, it's time for another reminder to check out the Basketball-Reference Play Index. In case you don't already know about the PI, it's a set of research tools that allow you to create customizable queries on our database, save the results, and share them with others. With the PI, you can:

  • Use the Player Season Finder to search through all NBA, ABA, & BAA players' regular season and playoff statistics for performances that match your criteria.
  • Use the Player Game Finder to search through NBA players' regular season and playoff game logs (since 1985-86) for games matching your criteria.
  • Use the Head-to-Head Finder to search for games in which two selected players played against each other.
  • Search for player and team consecutive-game streaks that match your criteria using the Streak Finders.
  • Search for team performances that meet your criteria with the Team Season Finder and Team Game Finder.
  • Use the Draft Finder to search through every NBA/BAA draft for picks that match your criteria.
  • Use the Player Comparison Finder to compare the stats of up to four players through (or in) a given season.

And best of all, these features are 100% free to use!

So go ahead, give them a try, and you'll wonder how you ever got along without them.

Player Season Finder Additions

15th December 2010

Yesterday I made some additions to the Player Season Finder, so let me briefly describe them here:

  • Tooltips were added below the seasons section for the last three seasons, making it easier to restrict your search to a recent season.
  • Birth country was added as a parameter, so you can now search for players born (or not born) in a particular country.
  • Single season searches can now be restricted to players who qualified for the Minutes Per Game leaderboard.
  • Games started was added to the statistics list in the additional criteria.
  • A fifth option was added to the additional criteria section, allowing you to compare two statistics. For example, you can search for players with an assist-to-turnover ratio of at least 5:1 (minimum 100 assists).

PI Finds: Kidd Tidbits

1st November 2010

BBR reader Jim Keller used our Play Index Game Finder to do some interesting research on Jason Kidd's performance vs. Charlotte last Wednesday, so I thought I'd post his findings. Take it away, Jim (what follows in blockquotes is his work):

Kidd talked about the game here:

Plus/Minus traditionally loves it some Jason Kidd, and it's not hard to see why. Even at his advanced age, Kidd does just about everything you could ask of a guard at both ends (except stay with smaller, quicker PGs)... He distributes as well as anybody not named "Nash", "Paul", "Williams" or "Rondo"; he continues to rebound the ball at a high level; he's suddenly a deadly outside shooter; he can defend SGs or big PGs effectively; and he generally makes the Mavs a lot better when he's on the floor. People scoffed when Wayne Winston's +/- system said Kidd was one of the highest-impact players in the game, but I'm not so sure that was such a crazy idea after all.

Layups: Jamison Joins Ignominious Club

20th February 2010

In his first game as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers, things could not have gone much worse for Antawn Jamison -- the former Wizards F went 0-for-12 from the field in his Cavs debut, scoring just 2 points in 26 minutes off the bench. With the donut he produced from the floor, he also added his name to this group of embarrassing performances since 1987:

PI Finds: Monta Ellis – 45 Pts, 6 PF, 7 TO

1st December 2009

Last night, Monta Ellis torched the Pacers for 45 points in a 126-107 Warriors win. 45-point games are surprisingly common, but Ellis was one of just 10 players to score 45+ and also foul out of the game since 1986-87:

PI Finds: Dirk Drops Another 30+ On the Spurs Dynasty

19th November 2009

One cool thing about our Play Index is that it allows you to search for single-game performances vs. a specific team (going back to 1986-87, that is). Using the Game Finder, you can also look for the total games in a span matching a certain criteria, and you can combine that with the opponent search to come up with a list like this:
